Liberty City 2012 Slate of Nominees of Board Members

On February 2, 2012, the General Membership of Liberty City will elect new board members for 2012. The Liberty City Board proposes that this slate of members be elected to the Board of Directors for 2012:

SHERRIE COHEN ran a historic campaign in May 2011 as Philadelphia's first out LGBTQ Democratic candidate for Philadelphia City Council.  She ran citywide for City Council At Large, almost winning the race with over 44,000 votes, but losing by 1600 votes.  A lifelong activist since the civil rights and anti-war movements of the 1960's, Sherrie engaged in a major protest for Philadelphia’s lesbian and gay rights anti-discrimination ordinance in City Council in 1975, when she and other lesbians were kicked down four flights of stairs in City Hall by police and later sued for police brutality.  A public interest attorney, Sherrie has fought for the health and welfare of people against the tobacco and defense industries, was one of the attorneys who sued successfully to save the 11 neighborhood libraries inPhiladelphia that had been slated for permanent closure in 2008, and is currently a tenant rights attorney with the Tenant Union Representative Network.  She is also a Democratic committeeperson, an elected member of the PA Democratic Party’s State Committee and vice-chair of its LGBT Caucus, and a Community Grantmaking Committee member of the Bread and Roses Community Fund.  Sherrie formerly served as Chairperson of the labor/community Coalition For Essential Services, Steering Committee member of the Coalition to Save the Libraries, Co-Chair of the International Women's Day Coalition and Co-Chair of the Civil Rights Committee of the Philadelphia Bar Association.

Appointed to the Liberty City Board in September 2011, Sherrie had previously served in 2008-09, when she chaired the Board Development Committee and co-chaired the Policy and Advocacy Committee.

JASON LEWIS is a communications specialist from Southern Lancaster County Pennsylvania.  He is a 2003 Temple University Graduate and resides in Washington Square West where he has lived for the last 10 years.  Jason is the Community Liaison and Communications Specialist for Philadelphia City Councilwoman At-Large Blondell Reynolds Brown, planning special events, assisting in the writing, research and data analysis for all of the Councilwoman’s public speaking engagements and creating and directing the Councilwoman’s social media strategy.  Prior to joining her City Hall team, Jason was a volunteer fundraising coordinator for 2 years. Jason is proud to have enhanced the Councilwoman’s visibility in the LGBT community, helping her become the first Philadelphia elected official to produce an “It Gets Better” in the Fall of 2010 and assisted in the introduction and passage of an Equal Benefits Ordinance, which would requires companies that receive large contracts from the City of Philadelphia to offer domestic partner benefits.

Jason was a proud member of the inaugural class of the Distinctive Officers Program, an LGBT leadership training program sponsored by the Delaware Valley Legacy Fund.  He was a former advertising sales representative at the Philadelphia Gay News and is a frequent volunteer for fundraisers supporting LGBT or LGBT friendly candidates.  In 8th Grade his dream job was to someday be “someone’s George Stephanopoulos,” and is pleased to see that goal come to fruition.

HOWARD MOSELEY, Deputy Director of Manayunk Development Corporation, previously worked for the City of Philadelphia in various capacities including as Special Assistant to the Managing Director, Project Coordinator for the Philadelphia Gaming Advisory Task Force, and Project Manager for The Emergency Preparedness Review Committee and for the Education Advisory Task Force.  Prior to serving the City, Howard developed technology solutions for the Franklin Mint. For the past 12 years, he has developed voter registration, voter contact, finance compliance and turnout tracking software for political campaigns.  For many years, he has also encouraged teams of gay youth to volunteer on rainbowfriendly campaigns.

SOLARIS POWER came to Philadelphia in 2005 to study the impact of social welfare provisions on the LGBT population at the University of Pennsylvania. While working on a graduate degree, she co-led the programs’ QSWAP (Queer Social Workers and Allies at Penn), served on the executive board, and as a research representative. Prior to this, Solaris worked in behavioral research at a state-funded criminology center, after attending theUniversity of Maryland. She has extensive experience in working with at-risk populations, including housing issues and victim advocacy, from direct service to special event planning. She has served on the endorsement committee since 2008, and is in her first year at TempleLaw.
